Layering your skincare products in the correct order ensures maximum effectiveness and absorption of each product's active ingredients. Here's a general guideline for both morning and nighttime routines:
Morning Skincare Routine:
Cleanser: Start by cleansing your skin to remove any impurities or excess oil accumulated overnight.
Toner: Apply a toner to rebalance the skin's pH levels and prep it for better absorption of subsequent products.
Serum: Apply a serum with targeted ingredients, such as vitamin C for brightening or hyaluronic acid for hydration. Allow it to absorb fully before proceeding.
Moisturizer: Follow up with a moisturizer to lock in hydration and provide a protective barrier for your skin.
Sunscreen: Finish off with a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.
Nighttime Skincare Routine:
Makeup Remover/Cleansing Oil: If you wear makeup or sunscreen, start by using a makeup remover or cleansing oil to dissolve and remove these products.
Cleanser: Double cleanse with a gentle cleanser to thoroughly remove any remaining dirt, oil, or impurities.
Exfoliant (Optional): Use an exfoliant, such as an AHA or BHA, to remove dead skin cells and promote cell turnover. This step can be done 2-3 times a week.
Toner: Apply a toner to rebalance the skin's pH levels and prepare it for better absorption of subsequent products.
Treatment: Apply any treatment products, such as retinol or acne spot treatments, allowing them to penetrate deeply into the skin.
Serum: Follow up with a serum containing potent ingredients like peptides or niacinamide to address specific skin concerns.
Moisturizer: Apply a nourishing night cream or moisturizer to replenish moisture and support the skin's barrier function while you sleep.
Eye Cream: Finish off with an eye cream to hydrate and address concerns like dark circles or fine lines around the eyes.
Remember to wait a few minutes between each step to allow the products to fully absorb into the skin before applying the next one. Additionally, always listen to your skin's needs and adjust your routine accordingly. Sometimes, if my skin is too dry, I take a step back from products that I find to dry out my skin for a few days. Then I can continue when I feel my skin is okay to go back to it.
